It’s vitally important that our operational colleagues receive regular refresher training, to keep their skills up to scratch. Safety, efficiency and the quality of service we provide to our customers depends on it.
Improving operational performance is key to our business and the on-going focus of our training activity. As part of our training needs analysis, we undertook a review of the skills and competencies of a cross-section of operational colleagues.
The training needs of more than 180 staff in water process controller roles were assessed. Our in-house Learning and Development team then worked with each business areas to design, develop and deliver a wider refresher training programme to address any gaps.
The training combines practical, hands on exercises with classroom and distance learning, plus one-to-one coaching where required. On average each colleague went through 2 to 3 days of training – resulting in a 23 per cent increase in competence levels.
The intention is that this approach to competence assessment will become a business as usual activity, with training solutions linked to the gaps identified by the assessments.
